JUNE 21st, 2003: SUMMER SOLSTICE

the shortest night of the year, the Saint John feast,
This celebration is a great Music Day popular street festival silmutaneously with 120 countries over the world

Spirit of « Fête de la Musique »

In France, on June 21st 1982, the « Fête de la Musique » was launched by minister of the Culture Jack Lang. June 21st is the day of the summer solstice, a pagan night which recalls the ancient tradition of Saint John’s feasts. This is a popular and largely spontaneous event, this gathering of professional and amateur musicians who go down out on the streets and play for the pleasure, for fun, for free. Its new focus on all kinds of music, was the incarnation of a policy striving to give an equal place to amateur musicians, to rock, jazz, rap, singing and traditional music, all of which were given a chance to be heard alongside so-called « serious » music. The vitality of the Fête also depends on the energy of the many volunteers who individually do their best to make sure this exceptional day is rich in spontaneity and in its expression of youthful abandon. It began to be « exported » in 1985 (the European Year of Music). In fifteen years, the « Fête de la Musique » would be taken up in over one hundred countries throughout the five continents. Berlin, Budapest, Barcelona, Istanbul, Liverpool, Luxemburg, Rome… the “Fête” has also taken root in San Francisco, in New York this year, in Manila, and has practically become the national feast in many African countries, not to mention Brazil and Colombia. Though its success is most obvious in big cities’ hearts, many other dimensions lie behind: it visits prisons, shares the lives of hospital patients and personnel, brings together educational establishments and music schools, creates links between cities and suburbs, brings a fresh breeze to rural communities, highlights the months of efforts of an individual, a group, an association, or even an entire community.

While avoiding formality, the « Fête de la Musique » naturally promotes democratisation of the access to artistic and cultural endeavours.

The Fête de la Musique was celebrated in over 120 countries in 2002. It brought together a wide range of participants originating from the French cultural network or from other countries organizing festivities. The themes of emerging talent, music from cultures over the world, new places for music, multidisciplinary musical events and musical processions, defined as the core axes of development for the 2002 Fête de la Musique, were carried forward at international level with striking creativity. These themes reflect the founding principles of the Fête de la Musique and one can safely assert that June 21 has, over the years, become a quality opportunity to share and discover music all over the world and from all over the world.

Fête de la Musique 2002 attracted large numbers of enthusiastic music lovers, performers from a very wide spectrum of musical traditions as well as organizers from different backgrounds, united by the same desire and energy to create an unforgettable day. Already, plans are underway to make this year’s Fête de la Musique an even more remarkable occasion. And, things are looking good since the 2002 celebrations convinced potential partners of the interest in participating in what has become a high profile event, and we are delighted to report that local authorities, Ministries of Culture, Culture centres, associations and private enterprises have expressed their interest in supporting Fête de la Musique 2003.

The Fête de la Musique is an exceptional phenomenon since it is the leading international music event occurring simultaneously on all 5 continents which is open to all. The status and reputation acquired by Fête de la Musique over the years has made it a key event in the cultural life of a number of countries and, in spite of initial difficulties, there can be no doubt that Fête de la Musique will grow from strength to strength as it embraces the national imagination of more and more countries.
